Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsMost of the money lost in legal advertising disappears before anyone calls. It goes to people looking for a job, a labor poster, a template letter or an employer-side employment lawyer for a company handbook. Employment is an especially leaky category, because the same words mean different things to a worker, a manager and a job hunter. Careful structure and a patient negatives list are the difference between a campaign that fills a calendar with consultations and one that fills an inbox with questions you cannot take.
This page walks through how we build, run and measure Google search campaigns for an employment lawyer who represents employees. Our fee is $895 a month for Google Ads alone, with ad spend separate and paid to Google.
Campaign map
| Campaign | Searches it targets | Landing page | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Termination | "wrongful termination attorney", "fired after medical leave lawyer", "laid off unfairly lawyer" | Matter page for being let go | Often the highest value and the most contested |
| Discrimination and harassment | "workplace discrimination lawyer", "sexual harassment attorney", "hostile work environment lawyer" | Discrimination or harassment page | Reader may be employed and cautious; use calm copy |
| Retaliation and whistleblower | "retaliation lawyer", "fired for reporting", "whistleblower employment lawyer" | Retaliation page | Keep separate: the language and the facts differ |
| Wage and hour | "unpaid overtime lawyer", "wage claim attorney", "misclassified as contractor lawyer" | Wage page | Check which of these you screen in for, since some are low value |
| Severance and contract review | "severance agreement lawyer", "review my separation agreement", "employment contract attorney" | Severance review page with a document upload or booking link | Short sales cycle; a flat fee changes the economics |
| Brand and attorney names | Your firm name and attorney names | Home page or attorney page | Cheap, and protects against competitors bidding on your name |
Start with two or three rows. A single account with every matter mixed together makes the data hard to read and the budget hard to steer.
Intent
Two people can type nearly the same phrase and want different things. "Can my employer fire me for being sick" is a question. "Employment lawyer free consultation near me" is a decision. The first deserves an explainer and possibly a retargeting cookie. The second deserves a phone number. Mixing them in one campaign with one budget starves the second to feed the first.
So we group keywords by how close they are to hiring, and give each group its own bids and landing pages. Early on, the budget goes mainly to the closer searches. Broader research phrases are added carefully, usually with tighter geography and a lower cost, to see whether they ever turn into calls. Where they do not, we cut them without drama.
Negatives
| Theme | Examples of what to exclude | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Job seekers | jobs, careers, hiring, salary, resume, internship, apply | People looking for a job, or a job at a law firm, will click anything |
| Employer-side intent | for employers, HR compliance, handbook template, defense, company policy | A manager is not a worker with a claim |
| Do-it-yourself and forms | template, sample letter, pdf, form, poster, calculator | These readers want a document, not a lawyer |
| Government contact info | phone number, office hours, login, status | People trying to reach an agency, not hire counsel |
| Free-only wording | free legal aid, pro bono, legal help hotline | Your firm may not take every matter without a fee; decide how broadly to match this |
| Education | degree, course, certification, school, classes | Students and researchers |
| Matters you do not take | workers compensation, union grievance, immigration visa, unemployment appeal | Fill this in from your declined-call log and search term reports |
This is a starting point. The best negatives list comes from a few weeks of search term reports and a candid log of which calls you had to decline.
Hours, phones and place
Evenings and early mornings count
Many callers are free before work, at lunch and after dinner. We schedule around when someone will answer, and test whether a late-evening window brings real calls or voicemail.
Depends on staffing
If you can answer instantly, click-to-call formats can be strong. If the phone often rolls to voicemail, a form and booking link may do better.
Where you can serve, not where you wish
Target by county or metro, and remember that a worker's employer might be in one place while they live in another. Check that your location settings match how you actually take clients.
Mobile first
Most lunch-hour searches are on a phone. We check phone performance separately and make sure the landing page works with a thumb.
Spanish campaigns, if staffed
A separate Spanish campaign with Spanish landing pages and a Spanish-speaking answerer, or none at all.
Calm and specific
Say what the firm does, where, how to reach a person and when. Avoid promises about outcomes and anything your bar would call misleading.
Tracking
Dynamic or fixed tracking numbers by campaign and landing page, with call duration recorded.
Every form submission and scheduled consultation is logged as a conversion, with separate labels for severance review and general inquiries.
A simple log with consultation held, declined, referred or signed lets you tell us which campaigns bring the matters you want. Keep case details out of the ad platform.
With enough data, qualified outcomes can be imported so bidding learns from real consultations rather than any call.
Budgeting
The honest way to set an ad budget is backward. Decide what a typical signed matter is worth to the firm after costs and what you can afford to pay to acquire one. Estimate, from your own intake log, how many consultations it takes to sign a matter and how many calls it takes to schedule a consultation. Multiply those ratios and you have a ceiling for what a call can cost before the campaign loses money. We do not quote benchmark costs, because they vary by city, matter and season, and published numbers tend to be misleading.
Advertising for an employment lawyer has an extra wrinkle. Contingency matters pay late, sometimes years later, so cash flow matters as much as the ratio. A flat-fee severance review pays almost immediately. Many firms pair them: the quick review service helps fund the ads that also find the longer cases. We help you model both, and we keep spend modest until the data justifies more.
Weekly rhythm
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Search terms report | New irrelevant queries become negatives |
| Call log against outcomes | Shows which campaigns bring calls you would take |
| Missed and after-hours calls | A campaign cannot outperform a phone nobody answers |
| Landing page behavior | Mobile speed, form completion and click-to-call taps |
| Disapproved ads and policy notices | Legal and sensitive categories get flagged; fix quickly |
| Spend against plan | Catches runaway budgets before they matter |
Pages and wording
Specific beats clever
Headlines that ask readers about their own circumstances can run into platform policies on personal attributes, so we favor statements of what the firm does: "Employee-side employment lawyers", "Severance agreement review", "Wage and overtime claims". Each draft is reviewed by you before it runs.
Match the search
A reader who typed a severance question should land on the severance page, not a list of fifteen practice areas. That alone often changes how many people stay.
Say it once, plainly
A short line on how matters are paid for and what the first conversation involves, worded the way your bar allows, removes the biggest silent objection.
Both, above the fold
Some people will call during lunch, others will not talk where they are. Offer a tap-to-call button and a form that asks for little, with an honest time for a response.
Call, location, sitelinks
Show the phone number and hours, link to the fee and severance pages and, where it is real, the languages spoken. Skip claims of rankings or ratings you cannot support.
Short and visible
Many states expect or encourage a notice that website contact does not create an attorney-client relationship. Put approved wording where a reader will see it.
Pitfalls
The first is broad matching with automated bidding turned on before there is any conversion data. The system learns from the first conversions it sees, and if those are accidental calls or job seekers, it finds more of them. The second is sending every ad to the home page. Workers in distress do not want to hunt for the right page. The third is treating a call as a win without checking what happened on it. A twelve-second hang-up and a thirty-minute consultation look the same in a click report.
The fourth habit is the most human: ignoring the account for months because it seems to be running. Search terms change as laws change and as local news does. A weekly look takes minutes, and a month of neglect can cost more than our management fee.
The investment
Ad questions
Google Ads on its own is $895 a month to manage, or $1,595 once a second platform joins. Nothing is locked in by a contract, and the budget you spend on clicks is paid to Google separately.
It belongs in the plan, but start with it only if you can afford the competition. Many firms start with narrower matter phrases and widen once they see what converts.
Use clear wording on the page about what the first conversation is, keep a few screening questions on the form and add negatives for free-only searches. Some of these calls will still happen. A calm, polite script for them helps.
Possibly, but fee wording is regulated in many states. Have ethics counsel approve it, and say clearly what applies to which matters.
They can help once there is solid conversion data. We usually begin with tighter control and move to automation after enough real consultations are tracked.
No. Accounts and data belong to your firm. We do not sell, trade or reuse them for anyone else.
